How Do I Use It?
- Type in a three or more word phrase that your spouse might say – don't forget to leave out the last word!
- Guess the next word, then press the “Submit” and compare with the word in your mind.
- Remember, it takes a while to achieve a high level of spousal schmaltziness so practice, practice, practice!
How Does It Work? - Part 1
The model was created using about 3.5 million documents, randomly selected from a corpus of text pulled from Twitter, blogs, and news sites.
It was tested on 250,000 test entries and it predicted the correct result 19.43% of the time. The model was optimized by removing sequences of words (n-grams) that did not have a minimum of ten occurances.
The probability of a word occuring is calculated based on the preceding n-gram. If the n-gram “get me a” appears in the corpus 10 times and is followed by the word “soda” 9 of those times, the probability of “soda” being the next word is calculated as 90%.
How Does It Work? - Part 2
Sentence structure was taken into acocunt when building the model allowing the it to use the beginning and end of a sentence predictively. This prevents the model from trying to predict a word using words from a previous sentence, which have less predictive power.
The model uses an interpolation method where three probabilities for a word are calculated (as described in slide 3) based on the previous 3, 2, and 1 words. Each of these probabilities is given a weight (called Lambda), and the weighted probabilities are combined to give a final score. This model uses Lambda settings of 0.6, 0.3 and 0.1 respectively. If there are no candidate words, the model suggests the word “the”.
