The scoring method that we will be using for week one uses your time this week vs. your previous best time on the challenge segments; so, the way that the math works is we take your previous best for a segment and divide it by the time that you rode today and that is your segment score. If you rode faster today than you have in the past, your segment score is greater than 1 and if you didn’t then your score is less than one. We add up your three segment scores and the highest sum wins the day. The reason that we do it this way (as opposed to using subtraction) is because it facilitates comparison between segments regardless of segment length. One problem with this scoring method is for riders that have not ridden one of the segments in the past; so, if you have not completed a segment before this week, your segment score is = 1 (but, you still have to it ride hard, and we will just have to use the honor system on this one).
For week one, the hot day is on Saturday April 17th. If you ride on the hot day, you get a 7% “bonus” which means that all segment times on Saturday will be multiplied by 0.93. an example of this is if you ride 2:00 on Final Push on Saturday your time will be altered to 1:52.
After sitting out the BLPLCRS in 2020 while recovering from a knee surgery, GC rode a PR on Howlin Bird Dawg and a huge PR on TWSS on the hot day to win the first week over AG.

Another way of looking at the results for week one. For each segment, the gray time is the riders previous best and the and the yellow time is their raw time this week. Note that the overall rankings incorporate the hot day bonuses.
Each week, the winner will receive a weekly score that is equal to the number of participants (n) for that week. Second place will receive n-1, third will receive n-2…, … and, last place for the week will receive 1 point. The overall standings will be based on the sum of their weekly scores. Since this is week one, the overall results will be the same a the week one results and that means that PR holds the coveted 4th place position.
The holder of the 4th place overall travelling trophy must provide AT LEAST three G-rated of “life with the trophy” for public use.
The week two course is 29.8 miles with 3 challenge segments and lots of climbing. The course may be completed at any time between (and including) Thursday, April 22nd, 2021 and Tuesday April 27th, 2021.

Week two is “One for the Heavy”. The challenge segments include one climb and two descents. For the climb segment, rider times will be recalculated as though everyone has the weight of the lightest rider and the rankings for the week will be based on the riders adjusted cumulative time required to ride all three segments. The weight adjustment uses the calculator kere to estimate a rider’s average watts based on their velocity, the slope of the hill, and their weight. The velocity is then recalculated based on same slop but with the weight of the lightest rider competing that week. To participate in scoring, you need to indicate your total ride weight during the ride. Your total ride weight is your body, your clothes, your bike, your Wahoo, etc.. Just hop on a scale while holding your bike after your ride and indicate the weight in pounds (yes, I know pounds is a unit of force) and put the weight in your ride description. Any rider that does not indicate their weight will be assigned the weight of the lightest rider. The hot day (7% “bonus”) for week two is Saturday April 24th.
GC wins another week, this time over PF. AG tied the best weight-adjusted uphill and had the best performances on both downhills but failed to get the hot day bonus landing him in third. The top-10 riders were separated by only 32 seconds over the three segments.

Another way of looking at the results for week two. PR’s 5th place in week 2 was enough to hold on to the coveted 4th place position. For ties in the overall standings, the first tie breaker goes to the rider with the most weeks of participation and the second tie breaker goes to the rider with the lowest single week place.
The week three course is a long one at 35.6 miles and 3 challenge segments. The course may be completed at any time between (and including) Thursday, April 29nd, 2021 and Tuesday May 4th, 2021.

Week Three is “One for the Old”. Rider times on all three segments will be adjusted for rider age based on the BRX18 method (which will be explained later). To participate in scoring, riders must indicate their age (in years) at the time of their ride. Any rider that does not indicate their age will be assigned the age of the youngest rider. Riders will then receive a segment score based on their adjusted performance relative to the fastest rider of that segment (fastest time/your time) and the largest sum of the three segments scores wins the day. The hot day (7% “bonus”) for week three is Thursday April 29th.
PF rode the fastest time (raw and age-adjusted) up TELEDILDONIC and KOMed The Wallow to win week 3 over GC.

Week four contains a time trial with two “bonus” segments contained within. On the way out, riders will encounter Reverse Spandex and on the return trip, they will ride Spandex Enormity. For each of the Spandexes, you will get a “bonus” of 6 seconds subtracted from your time for each rider that to beat. The fastest time trial (after the segment bonuses are subtracted) will win the day. The hot day (7% “bonus”) for week four is Monday, May 10th.
PF rode the fastest Hammer (time trial) and maxed out both bonus segments to take his second Deuce win in as many weeks.

For this week’s scoring, we are considering the advantages of newer, more technologically advanced (and, of course, more expensive) bikes on the effects of Coviduro performance. In order to be included in the scoring, you must bring your bike, as ridden during the week 5 ride, to Motorless Motion before the end of business on Tuesday, May 18th, 2021. Head mechanic/owner/manager Mike will perform a (very) precursory assessment of your bike (no inspection, no looking things up, etc.) and give you a number rounded to the nearest US dollar which is the worth of your bike for this week. His number is final. His number is also final. It is your responsibility to report this number for scoring- in your ride description, or you may provide it to the scoring committee in private if you don’t feel that this should be public information. Anyone who does not receive/report a bike appraisal using the appropriate channels with have their bike valued at 1 Brad. If Mike knows the CURRENT setup of the bike that you rode/will be riding intimately, you may get this information without a physical trip to the shop. Please use your judgement and try to minimize the amount of work on Mike’s end and maybe buy him a beer. The “working” model for performance correction based on bike price comes from a meta-analysis of several YouTube videos (mostly GCN) where people test different bikes on the same course. It looks like this:
The way to interpret the model (shown as a solid, red line) is that above about 5000 USD, there is no time penalty related to the cost of the bike. Below 5000 USD, there is a steepening curve that bottoms out at a 0 USD (dumpster) bike requiring ~22% more time to complete the same course and a 1000 USD bike requiring about 10% more time. The hot day (7% “bonus”) for week four is Saturday, May 15th.
GC won his third Coviduro Deuce week off of top-2 finishes in all three challenge segments- all on an old-ass, single-speed bike.
This week featured 12 riders competing on bikes that ranged in value from $75 (official) to over $10,000 (unofficial). (at least) 6 of the 12 riders used bikes that were not their fastest for this week’s ride.

Coviduro Deuce: Week Five | |||||||||||||||||
Alternative table for week five results. The gray time is the riders raw time, the white time (if present) has a 0.887 Q -> K adjustment, and the yellow time factors in the bonus for using a low-cost vehicle. Note that the overall rankings incorporate the hot day bonuses.
A solid 6th place showing in week 5 keeps PR solidly in the 4th place spot. Can he/she/they hold on for one more week?

For the week 6 Segmageddonathonocalypse, the scoring will be handicapped based on rider’s previous performance in weeks 1-5. For each segment (including the TT) ridden in weeks 1-5, you get a score that is fastest rider raw time/your raw time for that segment. This means that whomever rode the fastest on a particular segment gets a 1 and everyone else gets a number less than one with the slowest rider getting the smallest number. We then take the average of each segment score and then renormalize so that the greatest number is 1 (for the fastest rider in weeks 1-5) and all times from week 6 challenge segments will be multiplied by this “correction factor”. The figure below shows rider performance for week 1-5 and the correction factor (corf).
K riders who wish to ride week 6 without having ridden in weeks 1-5 will be given a corf = 1 and Q riders who wish to ride week 6 without having ridden in weeks 1-5 will be given a corf = 0.887. Please take a moment to appreciate the perfectly normal distribution curve for leader-normalized performances by GC. The hot day (7% “bonus”) for week three is Tuesday May 25th.
MF rode 3 segment PRs to take the week 6 win over JR who merely had 1 PR, a top ten time, three second fastest, and one third fastest segment performances.

Alternative table for week six results. The gray time is the riders raw time, the white time (if present) has a 0.887 Q -> K adjustment, and the yellow time factors in the handicap from weeks 1-5 (see “Scoring” above). Note that the overall rankings incorporate the hot day bonuses.
PR recorded a top-10 on Slap Earl and three personal almost bests (the silver medal thingy in Strava) to finish 5th place in week 6 and retain the 4th place overall for the Coviduro Deuce.
A special note about week six/final overall scoring: SD was unable to complete the week 6 ride during the allowed timeframe and will be allowed to do the ride on Thursday, May 27, 2021 and be included in the results. There is no potential scenario in which is performance (first through last) can impact the current fourth place overall standing but it may affect non-fourth placings.
