Where should I store my files/data?

We strongly recommend using either OneDrive or Dropbox to store your files. They are both cloud-based storage that works fairly seemlesly on your laptop. Which one to choose? OneDrive is provided by Middlebury College for free.

You’ll want to install the OneDrive client on your laptop. Go to Middlebury ITS Wiki for OneDrive and at the top, select either Mac or PC.

Set up and Organize a folder

Life is easier when things are organized. Before diving into the course, organize! If you are having problems seeing the folders in the video, be sure to zoom in.

Installing STATA

STATA is a statistical software package popular with economists. It is proprietary and hence we need to purchase a license.

To install STATA, purchase the 6-month Stata/IC license for $48 (as of April 2021) at “https://www.stata.com”.

Installing markstat and whereis in STATA

We’ll be customizing STATA in order to use Stata Markdown which mimics R-markdown and allows us to combine text, code, and results in one document.

Launch STATA, and follow the STATA instructions for markstat and whereis here. A quick video demonstrates how this is done.

Install Pandoc

We also want to install Pandoc which is the “engine” that converts text files in STATA to html and Word. To do this, follow the Pandoc Instructions here. A quick video demonstrates how to navigate this.
