1937

In 1937, “The Life of Emile Zola” (1937) won Best Picture at the 10th annual Academy Awards. The works of Emile Zola feature prominantly in the French style of film making known as “poetic realism”, though he himself was of the literary school of “naturalism”. 1937 was also the year that “Pépé le Moko” was released in France, though it was re-released in 1941 to an American audience. This film seems particularly significant not only in it’s noir-like themes, but it also clearly sets the stage for “Casablanca”. Therefore, to establish some context for the era in which Film Noir thrived, I’ve included the top-rated films from 1937 to 1939 for reference.
