Currently there is so much data being collected that is applicable to climate change– not only daily weather, but also air pollution, hospitalizations, healthcare costs, and satellite information. For example Francesca Dominici is using data science is study how air pollution causes death in different demographics.
Going forward, to fully utilize the power of data science to combat climate change, methods must be validated and accesible. Governments should also allow access to their databases that contain relevant information. Lastly, climate related NGO’s should invest in data science.
The HDSI is full of researchers like Dominici who are working to unlock “the power of data to solve intractable challenges”. They explore data-driven approaches to the most imporant issue facing humanity, like climate change.
I think it is very interesting to see the applications of data science to a topic that I’m really passionate about. Since data science is such a new field, it’s cool to see different branches of it developing right now. I’m interested in seeing what else data science can do to help combat climate change.
