Goals

My goal for this week was to finish the second tutorial series and complete the exercises on my own. I also set the goal to post a question on the QandA forumn when I got stuck so I didnt get bogged down for too long trying to solve my errors on my own.

Successes

After a few attempts, I was able to complete exercises 6-10 on my own! Here is the dinosaur I created from only this information:

I also successfully learnt how to make a plot go from drab:

To fab:

My Glamourous plot is:

  • broken into facets
  • colourful
  • informative
  • clearly titled
  • rid of useless text

Challenges

In the “tidying my code” tutorials I had followed the instructions correctly and my code looked the same as Danielle’s but I couldn’t understand why my plot wouldn’t print. After posting my Question on the QandA foumn my problem was quickly answered with the solution of adding “Print(picture)”. I had created the picture in my global enviroenment, i was just forgetting to add the print function to tell R Markdown to display my plot.

I struggled with adding different aesthetics to my plot because I would place them in the incorrect place within my code. For example whether added layers went under aesthetics or mapping.

I struggled with the reduced and tidy graphing code because I had just gotten used to the long version. I understand that after some time this will become easier and quicker however for now i think i will stick with the longer version, to avoid error messages.

Next steps

Next week I would like to start and finish the third coding tutorials. I will continue to persist with error messages and post questions on the forum if i run into any problems I can’t fix on my own. I also want to make sure I continue to practice the graphing skills I learned this week so I don’t forget then.
