3 Innovative Ways Johnson & Johnson Is Using Data Science to Fight the Pandemic
Johnson & Johnson is a holding company that is engaged in research and development, manufacture and sale of a range of products in the healthcare field. It operates through three segments: Consumer, Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices. Currently, Johnson & Johnson are working on a COVID-19 vaccine candidate that could play a major role in ending the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented with many unknowns. Johnson & Johnson decided that the best way to find a solution to the pandemic is through the use of data and data science. Johnson & Johnson is using a data science effort to help guide everything from the company’s research into a potential vaccine to its return to workplace policies for more than 130,000 employees around the world. There are three main and very innovate ways Johnson & Johnson is utilizing data science:
Johnson & Johnson created a COVID-19 surveillance dashboard that paints a real-time picture of how the virus is moving around the world. The goal of this tool is to use it to predict where the next surge in coronavirsus cases may happen. It also helps Johnson & Johnson decide where to test its investigational COVID-19 vaccine candidate.
COVID-19 can affect anyone, but it impacts people in different ways. Due to biological risk factors, patient demographics and other still-to-be-determined characteristics, COVID-19 can range from asymptomatic to fatal.Johnson & Johnson is creating models, so that we can better understand what might make someone more prone to severe illness from COVID-19, and how different treatment courses may affect patient outcomes.
The Return to Workplace Taskforce is using data science to make smart decisions about which labs can remain open, how many people can be on-site, and how facilities are configured and sanitized. Johnson & Johnson is setting up a model to track site density in real time and provide feedback about how employees should stagger their work hours. Additionally, Johnson & Johnson is using data to help determine if and how many employees should be tested for COVID, and how frequently testing should occur.
I liked learning about how Johnson & Johnson is using data to try and combat COVID-19. I found this article to be very relevant, but not as innovate as I had originally thought. I have been very interested in Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine candidate since they annouceded it. However, I am not as impressed with their data innovations. I think what they did with their data is cool and useful, but has definitely been done before. Hence, I did not love that the article referred to the data science work done by Johnson & Johnson as super innovative.
