Positive highlights of this dataset:

  • The data structure makes sense. It is right to frame different categories of hate-crime against racial, gender, age, and religious groups makes sense.
  • Cross-referencing Hate crimes with Census data to establish hate-crimes per population by county makes sense to a degree. It makes sense to explore the type of “hate-crimes” that are happening in the different communities in order to pull in the right resources to address the incidents.

Negative highlights of this dataset:

  • It is very sad to see that, because often times at a very high level top officials do not provide the adequate committment for police officers to be able to positively assess hate-crimes we are having to work with skewed data. The fact that cases are missing, makes it very difficult to address social issues and come to decisions for investment in communities and police officer education.
  • Although there are at least 8 categories where hate-crimes are framed I think this could be improved. For starters, there are not any hate-crimes listed for females? I wonder if this would fall deceptively under women abuse? Secodly, “gay-male” hatecrimes could perhaps be extended to begin with to the LGBTQ+ group. I have seen in studies and news that the transgender community is specially affected by hate-crimes, perhaps more so (nowadays) than gay males.
  • I also think that iso having catholics listed perhaps there could be a religion category. I have not seen many anti-catholic groups or offenders in the US. Perhaps other “minority” religious groups as the Mormon Church, or Jehova’s Withnesses may have a higher propensity of hate crime incidence than Catholics.

Different paths I would be encouraged to study about this dataset

  • I would like to look closer into crimes against females, and the LGBTQ+ community by race.
  • I would like to have a closer look at the age groups of offenders if available, perhaps there are things that can be done to mitigate or deterr these events from occurring.

Follow ups:

  • I would probably want to try to set a standard for data collection through committees that are specially trained in hate-crimes, as it is the case of Law enforcement in Boston.
  • I would set up a special task force to review counties with the highest incidence of hate-crimes in order to determine the root cause of these events.
