Summary

Overall, I think that while this dataset offers insight into the behavior of hate crimes, its far from an accurate picture of hate crimes in America. Other than the refusal of some police counties to report on these crimes, there is also the factor that many hate crimes undoubtedly go unreported. So, with the combination of missing data and unreported day, I would conclude that this data has definitely under-reported on hate crimes. I would like to study this data set through more context; for example, was there a reason for the spike against Jewish people in Kings County, NY? Why have crimes against gay males steadily increasing even with more access to education about the LGBTQ+ community and more representation in the media? I think it would be interesting to see if there was any political/social/economic factor that might have had an impact on these numbers. I would also like to study why some counties in New York experience more hate crimes than others- what do some counties do that decrease their reported numbers? One thing I would do to follow up on this dataset after viewing it would be comparing these results to other big cities in America. The other thing I would do is more research on how we can work to make sure that counties DO report hate crime cases, and how we can encourage people to report any hate crimes they experience. Not only would this help us have a better understanding on the behavior of hate crimes, but it would also help us pinpoint areas where certain minorities are more vulnerable, and in turn perhaps work on our prevention of these crimes in the first place.
