Exercise 1: Tell us about yourself

Answer the following questions:

1. What do you like to be called? (Also, don’t forget to make sure you put your name for the author at the top of this document as well as today’s date.)

Gabby.

2. Why are you taking DATA 205? What do you hope to learn, and how do you hope to use that knowledge?

It’s a required class.

Exercise 2: Analyzing Your First Graph

The following graph shows the gap between Black and white mortality rates in 2018 for the top 15 causes of death in the United States. The horizontal axis shows the difference in mortality rates for each cause of death. The width of each bar represents the combined mortality rate for Black and white people. The mortality rates are expressed as deaths by cause per 100,000 people.

Write a short answer (use complete sentences) for each of the following questions. You may either knit the document before you start writing or after.

1. What do you notice?

I noticed that Black people are more succeptible to higher mortality rates.

2. What do you wonder?

I wonder why the mortality rates for both races are disproportionate.

3. What impact does this have on you and your community?

This would affect me as it means I’m more succeptible to dying of lung disease.

4. What’s going on in this graph? Write a catchy headline that captures the graph’s main idea.

“Study Shows That Race May Lead to Higher Mortality Rates”.
