This markdown shows CBGs that are “proximate to shootings,” defined as being within 400m of a shooting. CBGs within this distance of multiple shooting will have the cumulative sum for their “proximate_incidents” number. For now, I generated aggregated to month using a 400m distance threshold; these two things can be changed very easily to get different versions of this data.
This markdown does some quick visualizations showing how this can affect the data.
The full process is in the cbg proximities to shootings.R script.

I show: CBGs by their “proximate incdents” by month for 2019/2020. For contrast, CBGs containing a shooting for 2020 follow. At the end, one month of shootings is shown in an interactive map, with CBGs colored by the number of shootings they contain. Clicking a CBG will show its “proximate shootings” for that month. This was a visual check, but it might also give us a sense as to how might want to tweak the distance parameter as well.
