In 2019 San Diego Police officers made arrests or wrote up reports on 4,329 occassions where the person’s mental health was the cause for the 911 call.
And while those calls decreased in 2020 during the pandemic, police officers made arrests or drafted reports on 3,669 occassions.
The numbers show the resources that police spend on mental health. Officers are considered to be on the front line of America’s mental health crisis. A troubling trend for those who say we as a nation, as a city, are not doing enough to address those with mental health conditions and instead are relying on law enforcement.
