In this blog, I would like to address aspects in real world that could be drastically impacted by Data science and concepts of Machine learning.
So far I have seen many datasets that were generated were unstructured and were treated to be useless once the period of retention is over. But with the advent of machine learning concepts and different aspects of data science, we are going to see a huge change in the way we treat lot of this data. One example could be traffic patterns i.e., till few years ago, there was no real use case for these daily traffic videos or stats. But with the incoming of autonomous vehicles, everything is going to change. We need as much data as possible to train these, to ensure these vehicles are ready for the real world movements and incidents. Suddenly these data sets are turning into a treasure of information.
Internet of things (IOT) has been a convenience so far, but since last few years, we see that every manufacturer is trying to embed a smart device into their products. Eg: Refrigerators, Washers/dryers, smart lights etc. Companies have realized that the data which these IOT devices give out is much more valuable that the actual product they are selling. Amazon Alexa is a perfect example, and this trend is only going to increase.
Social Media:
Social Media is one of the places which are getting heavily impacted implementation due to data science concepts. Though it begun quite some time ago, we are seeing that corporations getting deeply vested in understanding users based on their profile, movements and even the pages they visit for how many times and how much time they spend. Though this is purely legal for commercial purposes, its an intrusion on individual’s privacy. With the implementation of recommendation algorithms using machine learning techniques, efforts are made to keep the user engaged as much as possible. But in this process, the user is fed same kind of info repeatedly which keeps them interested and engaged. This is having an impact on general population as they are kept in loop where they are fed same kind of opinions repeatedly. Though there has been some opposition to this recently, but in indirect ways I see this continuing.
