Legendary baseball player Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs in his storied 22-year career, making him third all-time in career home runs. Right behind him is Yankees shortstop Alex Rodriguez with 696 in his own 22-year career. These two both ended their careers at similar ages, with Ruth just slightly ahead of Rodriguez in terms of home runs hit.
However, Rodriguez had a quicker start to his home run total than Ruth, partially due to the fact that Ruth began his career as a pitcher for the Red Sox before switching to outfielder. Ruth had under 100 at bats in each of his first two seasons, while Rodriguez had 54 and 142 in his first two seasons.

In eighth place on the all-time career home runs list is hitter Jim Thome, with 612 in his 22 year career. His home run tally stalled slightly around 2005, as he only played 59 games that season due to an injury. Right behind him on the list, in ninth place, is Sammy Sosa, who had 609 in his 18 year career. Though he played for four years less than the three other men listed, he still finished in ninth, as he came out of the gates in his fourth season and had 532 at bats, and hit 15 home runs. His play was very consistent throughout his career, as he regularly hit near or above 40 home runs a season, with his most being 66 in 1998.
