There was a total of 1515 road related fatalities in Victoria between 2014 and the latest data recorded in 2019 (17 March 2019).
10.1% of those fatalities were related to alcohol.
Note: 2019 latest data currently only contains up to 17th March 2019.
Between the years 2014 to 2017, road fatalities stayed relatively similar, with a total of approximately 300 per year.
2018 had a decline in deaths, decreasing by 74 from 2017.
For the first 3 and a half months of 2019 fatalities is recorded as 37.
Drivers are by far the largest contributor to road fatalities and followed closely by car passengers.
This is expected because there is a lot more cars compared to bikes, motor bikes and pedestrians.
Looking at the days of the week there is an increase of fatalities and alcohol related fataliteis on Friday and the weekend.
Once again, this is expected as there are usually an increase in outings and events which can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic.
Tuesday records the lowest fatalities at just under 150.
Splitting the previous boxplot into days of the week, the median age of Friday and the weekend regardless of whether it is an alcohol related death or not is lower compared to other days of the week.
Alcohol related deaths medians are all lower than their non-alcohol related deaths with the exception of Monday where it is a lot higher by approximately 16 years.
This is very interesting and may suggest that those who are older tend to enjoy alcohol on a Monday.
The choropleth map of Victoria colours the local government areas between orange and red depending on the amount of fatalities experienced in each area.
Areas around Melbourne tend to have shades closer to red to indicate more deaths. While regional areas of Victoria tends to experience less road related deaths, there are some which do have a darker shade showing approximately 40 to 50 deaths overall.
