After signing up for my API key with the New York Times, I decided that I needed to explore what kinds of lists were available for reading into R. So I started with a top level list of lists as a good place to explore the types of lists available.
The raw JSON file of lists is read into a dataframe, and we can then look at the status of the API call.

It appears that the data is formatted in either JSON or XML, so understanding the nodes where the data that you want is stored is still a very important aspect of the entire process. It helps to be able to pause and examine the data in whatever format it is in, so that you can familiarize yourself with where exactly the data that you want is located inside the downloaded package of data. Overall though, it is worth the effort to be able to extract data from authoritative sources by using and API.
