I only needed a handful of packages for this assignment. I initially loaded httr, but wound up not needing it. From the last assignment I picked up jsonlite to read and parse and lemon for printing initial results.

It took a minute to understand how the API call should be structured. NYT has good documentation, I discovered, on how API calls are to be formatted. I was really uncomfortable with the notion I would need to publish an API call with the key the Times gave me. So after I got this API working and into a dataframe, I hunted for a solution to hide my key while still using it in the code.
I found a solution to add a line in the R environment naming a variable with my API key. Then I can reference that key, have it all function, but not show it to the entire Internet. Pasting the “root” URL and my key variable together into a the “url” variable did the trick.
From assignment 7, I was pleased we’d be working with JSON since I found this the easiest to work with. After using the function fromJSON and piping data.frame afterwards made a data frame that can be edited and used for analysis.
url <- paste0("https://api.nytimes.com/svc/mostpopular/v2/viewed/1.json?api-key=",Sys.getenv("NYT_KEY"))
x <- fromJSON(url, flatten = TRUE) %>% data.frame()

My chosen API does not have a ton of results, so doing a lot of analysis with it is a bit needless. I went for the most viewed articles in the last 7 days. To no surprise they are mostly politics or COVID related, except for a few articles including one about an extremely tough beetle…
I learned how to hide my API keys, a skill that will likely transfer to other situations. And discovered that once the API structure is understood, pulling others in becomes a pretty straightforward matter.
