History of Magangue Municipality
Magangué is a Colombian municipality located on the banks of the Magdalena River, in the department of Bolívar. This Bolivarian municipality is known as “The Capital of the Rivers”, since in this place of the country the rivers Cauca and San Jorge flow into the Magdalena. It was founded in 1610 by Diego de Carvajal, and refounded on October 28, 1776 by the Spanish military man Antonio de la Torre y Miranda.
The city is the second most populated in the department of Bolivar after Cartagena and is located in the area with the greatest number of marshes in the country. Despite this, the city’s drinking water supply is deficient.34
In terms of transportation infrastructure, its port connects the departments of Sucre and Córdoba with the Magdalena River.5 In addition, in 2016, work began on the construction of the “Bridge of Reconciliation”, which will be the longest in Colombia and will link Magangué with the Momposina depression, and this with the center of the national territory.
