Arsenal vs Manchester United

I collected 2,000 tweets from English Premier League soccer teams Arsenal and Manchester United to find out which team had more twitter activity within a 200 mile radius of Cincinnati. I used their twitter handles, @Arsenal and @ManUtd to pull data on both teams.

Activity by Day of the Week

Question 1

How does the number of tweets associated with Arsenal’s account during the week compare to Manchester United’s, and which team has a bigger proportion of tweets throughout the week?

Fans of Arsenal engaged with the account more on Thursday and Sunday. This is likely due to the fact that Arsenal were playing on both days. As for Manchester United, there was increased engagement with the account on Sunday, this again can be explained by the fact that they had a game on Sunday against a major team (which they lost unfortunately). When comparing proportions for both teams, it’s clear that Manchester United generally has more activity throughout the week compared to Arsenal.

Activity by Time of Day

Question 2

How does the number of tweets associated with Arsenal’s account during the day compare with Manchester United’s, and which team has a bigger proportion of tweets during the day?

Arsenal’s account saw increased activity in the middle of the day as well as late at night. This could possibly be explained by the fact that most people take their breaks between noon and 2pm and are off in the evenings. Manchester United’s account had more activity late afternoon. It is highly likely that they had games scheduled at that time from the period this data was collected.

A comparison of proportions shows that Manchester United generally posts more activity throughout the day compared to Arsenal.

A look at Retweets and Favorites

Question 3

Which of the two accounts has more retweets and favorites?

From the sample data, Manchester United’s account has more retweets and favorites compared to Arsenal. A comparison of the accounts throughout the week shows that Manchester United’s account has more favorites above the mean on most days of the week compared to Arsenal. The table shows the so most favorited tweets from the data, and it is clear that tweets related to Manchester United have more favorites. In conclusion, within a 200 mile radius of Cincinnati, you are more likely to find a Manchester United fan than an Arsenal fan.
