About This Project

The objective of this project is to compare two different data sets from Twitter. I chose two different competing fitness watch brands, Fitbit and Garmin Fitness. The following three questions address three different areas of Tweets: popular sources, popular hashtags, and popular day of the week.

Note that data sets were pulled from twitter on Tuesday, September 29th and timestamps are not accurate

Question 1

Which sources of tweets are used the most by users?”

This question addresses sources of tweets in which users use the most. These sources imply the popular device/source of tweet in order to better market users for each brand.

Tweets Sources of Fitbit

From the result, iPhone is the most popular source of tweets. This also implies that most Fitbit users use iPhone to pair with their Fitbit watches.

Like Fitbit, the most popular source of tweets used by Garmin Fitness users is iPhone. This also implies that most Garmin users also use iPhone to pair with their Garmin Fitness watches. From the above comparison between sources used by Fitbit and Garmin users, we can say that both brands can plan to market their products/services through iPhone users more than any other sources.

Question 2

What hashtag is most frequently used by users?

This question intends to look at the most popular hashtags used by users of each brand.

From the result, the most used hashtag bu Fitbit users is ‘Fitbit,’ and the second most popular is ‘Loseit,’ which is a food tracker for weight loss. Lose it! is an application in which Fitbit partners with and is where Fitbit users can earn Fitbit bonus by logging their calorie in-take in the application.

Garmin Hashtags

And below is a bar chart showing only the top 5 popular hashtags tweeted by Garmin Fitness users.

The bar chart shows 7 different hashtags instead of 5 because there are 4 hashtags that have the same number of counts. However, the most popular hashtag used by Garmin Fitness user is, no doubt, ‘Garmin.’ The second most popular hashtag used it Fitness, which is the name of Garmin’s fitness watch brand.

From the comparison of the two brands, we can see that Fitbit has other hashtag besides its brand’s name to keep the engagement with its consumers. We can also see that besides hashtags ‘Fitbit,’ ‘Loseit,’ and ‘Fitness,’ Fitbit also has popular hashtags of ‘Fitstats’ and ‘Google.’ Unlike Fitbit, besides ‘Garmin,’ ‘Fitness,’ and ‘Made4garmin,’ Garmin Fitness only has general hashtags like ‘Watch,’ ‘Watchfaces,’ ‘App,’ and ‘Clockface.’ This comparison tells us that Garmin Fitness needs to come up with more unique hashtags to keep an engagement with its users.

What is the most poplar hour of the day in which users tweet the most about Fitbit/Garmin?

This question addresses the popular hour(s) of the day by users of each brand.
