Social Media: Revenue and Influence

Do you plan to start a social media channel?

If yes, have you wondered…

  • How much money can you make from Ads?

  • How much influence can you exert in society?

This presentation is an example of revenue estimates and level of influence based on number of followers.

Revenue x Number of followers

First, I created a dataset and modeled revenue (a) ~ number of followers (b). Here, I predicted Ads Revenue for 3.5M followers.

#This is a fictional data set based on mtcars (re-purposed)
set.seed(123)
r <- mtcars$mpg
a <- r*runif(nrow(mtcars)*50, min = min(r),
             max = max(r))
b <- a*rnorm(length(a), mean(a), 100)/100
a <- a/100
dt <- data.frame(a,b)
model1 <- lm(b ~ a, dt)

predict1 <- predict(model1, newdata = data.frame(a = 3.5))

Plot: Revenue x Number of followers

A channel with 3.5M followers is estimated to bring a revenue from Ads of approximately $1,554 every month. plot of chunk cars

Level of influence

Finally, I estimated the level of influence of 3.5M based on cutoff points. See first lines below:

paste0("Your level of influence is... ", ifelse(input$sliderX <
1000000, "Unnoticeable. From all your followers, pehaps a few
hundreds really see your content at all.", ifelse(input$sliderX
< 2000000, "Almost unnoticeable. Very few people change their
opinions based on your statements.", ...

For 3.5M followers: Your level of influence is… Very noticeable. Your statements can change most of your followers' opinions, but your influence is limited to those who follow you.

Thank you!
