While you can use R in command-line format in the console, you will want to have a good IDE (integreated development environment) for R. Even if you don't know what that means, you'll want it. My choice is RStudio, which you can also download for free.
The RStudio folks also provide RPubs, a place for all of us to publish and share our RMarkdown documents. My RPubs page is cmecklin , but not much is there yet.
Rcmdr package originally written by John Fox. It has most of what you'd need to get through a course on statistical methods (linear regression, ANOVA, generalized linear models) but your needs will eventually outgrow it and you'll need to do a bit of coding and utilize some of the 4500+ packages that are available. There are a few dozen 'plug-ins' now available that add further functionality to the menus.Stuff for my classes…to come.
ceemeck Eventually I'd like to have my own R package with functions peculiar to my teaching and research. For now, you can use source("http://campus.murraystate.edu/academic/faculty/cmecklin/ceemeck.R.txt"); right now it's limited to a few functions to draw ggplot2 style graphs with base style syntax. Eventually, I'll have some stuff for bootstrapping biodiversity, etc. there and one day it might be a real package in CRAN.
