Introduction

This assignment is a story of bunch of 6 friends living in their fancy unrealistic huge New York apartments who engaged the world in the most dramatic way to express love, fun, happiness and life in general. The iconic sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S which was broadcasted from 1994 to 2004 holds a special place in everyone’s heart and one can still binge on the series without getting bored.

The IMDb (Internet Movie Database) rating of the sitcom has always been skyrocketing. The average IMDb rating has always been above 8 out of 10, which is a good mark. For Season 1, the average rating is about 8.3 , while for Season 10, the rating is 8.6.

We have also plotted the number of average votes received per season. The average voting number sees a downward trend from Season 1 to Season 9, but there was a spike seen in voting for Season 10 from Season 9. The highest average voting is seen in Season 1 of about 4147 votes, while the minimum average of votes was seen for Season 9 of about 2760 votes. For Season 10, the voting spiked to 3625 on an average.

The Dialogues

The script of the series has been incredible and ofcourse there are famous dialogues, quotes and pick up lines which are known to every fan of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

10 years of telecast is a long run for the series, but do we know who has the most number of lines? Let us analyse this using a bar chart.

From the dataset we have counted the total number of dialogues of all seasons. The amazing chirpy Rachel has highest number of dialogues of 8956 lines followed the geeky Ross who has 8920 lines over the 10 seasons, while the hilarious Phoebe has the least number of dialogues about 7260 lines.

Season 1 and Season 10

Everyone was quite intruiged when F.R.I.E.N.D.S started in 1994, and were glued to the TV sets during the telecast of the emotional finale Season 10 in 2004.

Let’s compare the Season 1 and Season 10 for the number of dialogues.

Clearly, we can see Ross had the most number of lines in both these seasons. If we add the dialogues of Season 1 and Season 10, Phoebe had the least number of dialogues yet again. Also, we can see Season 1 had more number of dialogues for Chandler, Monica , Rachel and Ross than Season 10.

Central Perk

Central Perk Cafe is one of the iconic location in the sitcom where all these friends usually hangout. Getting introduced to cast members in Season 1, guest appearances, Rachel and Joey’s work place at some point of life and many iconic scenes were shot in the 10 years of the showbizz.

From script of the dataset, we have analysed total percentage of scenes filmed per season in the Central Perk. We filtered the scenes shot in each season and plotted the following pie-chart. From the analysis we can see, Season 6 had the highest number of scenes shot in Central Perk, while Season 2 had the least number of Scenes. The pie sections of each and the legends are arranged in the descending order.

Thus, we have analyzed a few elements of the timeless iconic sitcom. Be it the IMDb ratings, number of dialogues or the analysis of the Central Perk Cafe scenes, the iconic series holds special place in my heart because it has all elements of life and friendship.

The data visualizations created in this assignment, helped us to understand the performance of the sitcom, the elements of script and locations. The trends showed us the marvellous performance of the show, the bar charts helped us to analyse the dialogues in all seasons as well as comparison between Season 1 and Season 10 dialogues. The pie chart helped us to analyse the inclusion of Central Perk Cafe in every season.
