mtcars manual or automatic transmission regression analysis

Background

We perform a regression analysis to find out what factors affect mpg for the average car. Which types of transmission (manual or automatic) affects the mpg for a car.

Is an automatic or manual transmission better for MPG ? Can we Quantify the MPG difference between automatic and manual transmissions car?

Executive summary

Based on mtcars small dataset analysis we can conclude:

On average, automatic transmission cars consume more fuel then manual transmission ones, with 7.24 gallons more (24.39 - 17.15, the 2 manual and auto means) this estimation has a confidence interval of [3.21 , 11.28] the adjusted estimate for the expected change in mpg from AT to MT is + 2.94 gallons

Description

The data was extracted from the 1974 Motor Trend US magazine, and comprises fuel consumption and 10 aspects of automobile design and performance for 32 automobiles (1973–74 models).

Data cleaning

Variable am is numeric.

mtcars$am <- as.factor(mtcars$am)
levels(mtcars$am) <-c("auto", "manual")

Exploratory data analysis

Let's look at the distrubution of mpg

Data analysis

mpg.manual <- mtcars[mtcars$am == "manual",]$mpg

The coefficient for am is still positive but has higher value. There maybe some variables that colinear in the linear fit when all variables are included.

The null hypothesis is rejected by p-value = 0.000285 but the regression model covers only 36% of the variance. So, the model coefficients are:

The “Occam's razor” model explains 85% of mpg variance and contains only 3 predictors: formula = mpg ~ wt + qsec + am amMT estimated coefficient equals now to 2.9358 and represents the adjusted estimate for the expected change in mpg comparing auto versus manual for this new model containing 2 other predictors besides am.
