Tuesday was the last day for Pennsylvanians to apply for a mail-in ballot for the June 2 primary election.

Here’s what 6abc Action News Data Journalism Team found after analyzing mail ballot requests data from the Pennsylvania Department of State.

One in five registered voters are voting by mail

1.8 million, or about 20 percent of registered voters, requested for a mail-in ballot. That figure is more than 12 times the number of mail ballot applications submitted for the 2016 primary election.

Allegheny County is most up for voting by mail

More than 30 percent of registered voters in Allegheny County requested for a mail ballot. That figure is much higher than the state average of 20 percent. Fulton County has the smallest share of people voting by mail.

Delaware County voters waited the longest time to get their ballot mailed

Statewide, a typical voter waited seven days to get their ballot mailed. But voters in some counties had to wait much longer.

As of Wednesday evening, Delaware County has the longest average wait time of 19 days. While voters in the county have waited almost three weeks to get their ballot mailed, others in Clinton, Indiana, Columbia, Union, Schuylkill, Wayne, York and Wyoming counties waited just a few days.

If the Delaware County Election’s Bureau processes applications at this pace, voters who applied on Tuesday won’t be able to vote by June 2.

Democrats are twice more likely to vote by mail than Republicans

Statewide, more than 30 percent and 15 percent of registered Democrats and Republicans applied for a mail-in ballot, respectively.

Older voters are more likely to vote by mail

Nearly one in five registered voters ages 75 or older requested a mail ballot. On the contrary, fewer than one percent of voters under 25 applied for a mail-in ballot.

How we analyzed the data

The PA Department of State releases the current voter registration statistics and 2020 primary election mail ballot request data. We merged the two datasets to calculate the percentage of registered voters who applied for a mail-in ballot by different variable.
