Your Heart Rate and Aerobics!

We all want to get more aerobic excercise, but end up spending hours on the couch pondering these serious questions…

  • Is there a limit on how fast my heart can beat?
  • How slow can I go and still get a benefit?
  • How high of a heart rate is TOO high?

Check your References

These questions can be answered by referencing heart rate (HR) facts found in books or on the internet:

  • max heart rate (maxHR) is typically 220 minus your age in years
  • you should try and stay in the range of 55%-85% of your max HR

Use R!

If we know R, we start it up on a laptop and do:

age <- 41
maxhr <- 220 - age
hi <- maxhr *.85
lo <- maxhr *.55

output<- paste("a person of age",age, "should try to stay in the range", lo, "-", hi, "beats/minute")
output
[1] "a person of age 41 should try to stay in the range 98.45 - 152.15 beats/minute"
