Part II - Deconstruct
. The data visualization objective is to inform the general population of the number of deaths suffered globally, due to the Coronavirus. . The lines representing countries overlap with each other over time which makes it difficult to distinguish one country from another in order to view the number of deaths. A line graph might not be the most suitable visualization when capturing data for multiple countries. The law of connectedness says that objects connected by lines demonstrate relationships between objects. Whilst there is a degree of overlap across countries over time, the audience need to able to separate each country. . The law of similarity says that objects of similar characteristics are grouped, such as colour. The use of colour to represent each country needs to be distinctive enough to be able to differentiate each country. Pale colours are used for China and South Korea, however light grey and blue respectively are too similar in conjunction with their degree of connectedness. Italy, US, and UK use orange or yellow colors and overlap more over time, which is more problematic when trying to distinguish them. . The visualization conveys the number of deaths per country but doesnโt take into account the population density for each country in order to obtain the death rate for the respective countries. To avoid deception, area needs to be scaled correctly by converting total deaths number of deaths per country to a percentage to get a more accurate picture of how much each country has been affected relative to other countries.
