Introduction

This document shows analysisof tweets that mention Dunkin vs tweets that mention Starbucks. I’d like to look at the amount of interactions are given to these tweets to gauge popularity, specifically looking at retweets of each tweet. I will also look at the location of the users that tweet, if given to see if there is a concentration in preferences, especially worldwide. I think time could also be telling in terms of the day of the week a customer might tweet about either one. This analysis may provide an insight on which brand is, overall, more popular.

Question I Will Attempt to Answer:

How do the demographics between people who tweet about and, I assume, prefer either Starbucks or Dunkin differ?

Methodology

  • I chose to look at 10,000 tweets concerning both brands, using “Starbucks” and “Dunkin” as my search terms, respectively.
  • Only 9,965 tweets could be found with Starbucks mentioned.
  • I also did not include retweets because when I first ran the query without that condition, a lot of the tweets in the data stemmed from one tweet from a celebrity that was retweeted many times. I want to get as much unique data as possible.
  • Neither brand really has a dedicated hashtag that is widely known, so I thought just the name would be a good search.

rtweet_dunkin <- read_csv("https://myxavier-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/personal/largentm_xavier_edu/EY3gVU6sFhFGvZjKIKVYCHgBD453wOAuI4h_q_ZFrHu1Qw?download=1")

Question 1

Do tweets about Starbucks or Dunkin have more interaction in terms of retweets?

  • Tweets mentioning Starbucks average upwards of 15 more retweets per tweet. This excludes all tweets that did not get any retweets. I think this shows that the tweets including Starbucks either resonate more with the audience and are more engaging, or it is possible that they come from a more popular source than the Dunkin tweets did.

Question 2

Where are the people who tweet about each brand most frequently located?

  • Dunkin - Most people who tweet about Dunkin do not share their location, but the majority of tweets come from the US, which makes sense because this is where their largest presence is. Dunkin is only in 36 countries worldwide.

  • Starbucks - They definitely have a wider range of countries as there are tweets from 37 countries compared to 18 for Dunkin. The UK and Canada are also big markets for Starbucks. Starbucks has stores in 77 countries.

Question 3

What day of the week did people tweet the most about their brand?

  • Dunkin had the most tweets mentioning it on May 7th and 8th, which are a Thursday and Friday, respectively. Maybe people look forward to the weekend with an iced coffee!

  • All of the 9,665 tweets containing Starbucks occurred on May 11. This tells me that it is a more popular brand by users on Twitter, or that there was a news story talking about Starbucks that day which is likely considering they are beginning to open all stores following closures for Coronavirus.

Question 4

Are the brands themselves active on twitter within this data pull from their handles @dunkindonuts and @starbucks?

@dunkindonuts

  • It looks like Dunkin tweeted six times from this handle over the period. 3 of those tweets were responding to customers, and two were specifically concerning Mother’s Day.

@Starbucks

  • Comparatively, Starbucks tweeted 36 times and this was just in one day. Based on what they’ve tweeted, it looks like they are much more likely to be responding to customers’ comments/concerns/questions than Dunkin is. Only one of the tweets was not a reply to a customer.
