Introduction

We decided to find and scrape data from IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes and look at different film trends throughout the years. Some variables we looked at were genre, IMDb score, Rotten Tomatoes Score, year, director, budget, gross revenue, and content rating. We filtered our data to include movies from 1925 to 2019.

First, we wanted to look at how total scores differed based on genre. From the first bar graph we can see that averall movies with scores from 90.5 to 100 have the highest count compared to all other scores. Looking at the boxplot it is easier to break it down by genre. All of the medians are fairly high which is consistent with the bar graph. Documentary movies have the highest median and the highest minimum.

Below are bar graphs showing the counts for Rotten Tomatoes scores by genre for a few different years.

In 2009 and 1998 there is a larger range of scores and more spread out than in 2019. The frequency of genre also changes a lot too. An issue we saw while collecting data was that there is a lot more data from the more recent years than in the past, so as we made these visuals, the count continued to decrease as looked farther back in time.

Next, we wanted to look at how much Rotten Tomatoes scores and IMDb scores different from each other over the years. First of all, it appears that there is a lack of Rotten Tomatoes scores from around 1930 to 1950, and there is an overall lower amount of movies recorded by rotten tomatoes. This may be because Rotten Tomatoes was founded in 1998, so it is possible that they went back and reviewed only a select number of movies. The two different types of ratings show similar trends throughout, with a peak around 1955-1960 and a low around 1995-2000. The amount of movies made per year began to increase around 1995 as well which could be some indicator as to why scores decreased.

The above graph shows the correlation between the Average IMDb score and the average Rotten Tomatoes score by director. The average rotten tomatoes score and the average IMDb score have a positive correlation. Some of the directors above include Peter Jackson who directed the Lord of the Rings trilogy with an average IMDb score of about 8.1. M. Night Shyamalan directed The Sixth Sense and Split, and he has an average IMDb score of about 6.2.

There is a slight positive correlation between IMDb score and gross revenue for 2016.

This graph shows the correlation between film budget and gross revenue for the year 2016. The graph has a positve correlation. Some of the movies with the largest budget for 2016 were Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Captain America: Civil War and The Jungle Book.

Above, we looked at the IMDb scores for movies based on their content rating. We found that movies that are Unrated had the highest median IMDb score but the lowest number of movies. R rated movies were the most common and had the second highest median.

The scale of this graph is being affected a lot by a couple movies with HUGE budgets! The biggest being The Host, a horror film directed by Bong Joon-ho in 2006. Recently Bong Joon-ho just broke Oscar records with his award winning movie, Parasite. However, after a little more research into the movie The Host, we found that the budget is written as 11 Billion won, the korean currency. So when converted to US dollars it only comes out to about $11 million US dollars. Lady Vengeance is also a foreign film with its budget in a different currency.

Although this graph is still very busy, we can still draw from it that all the movies with the largest budgets are rated R and movies with the highest gross revenue are rated PG-13.

This graph shows a similar story to the first graphs depicting Rotten Tomatoes scores by genre. When looking at the IMDb scores, the results are similar. Drama has the highest amount of movies and higher scores. Comedy is the next most common genre but it leans towards the lower IMDb scores.

In the above graph you see a positive correlation between runtime and IMDb rating for movies in 2019. We labeled the movies that recieved the worst IMDb rating. We also colored the points based on their genre.

Here is a display of the most popular actors in top grossing movies and how many top grossing movies they were in. I defined top grossing movies as movies that made more than 600 million dollars. I filtered so it only includes the actors that were in at least 5 top grossing movies.
