The timeless appeal of the timepiece. The functional mechanism turned fashion pice. A whole category of fashion encompassing the recollection of time is a highly sought out experience. Luxury Brands among Patek Phillipe, Rolex, Richard Mille, and Audemars Piguet, have some of the most expensive watches sold at auction.
Patek Phillipe surely has the most outlandsish sales to date. With the highest grossing over 31 million dollars at auction in 2019. And the second most sold at 23 million in 2014. The average sold among all watchmakers are at about 2 million at auction.
Crunching the numbers pulls out some interesting statistics; excluding watches that have come up twice, 72 watches have sold for in excess of 2M CHF, representing a sum total of 311M CHF. Patek Philippe is the dominant brand making up 82% of the list, and interestingly, yellow gold is the top material at 44%, followed by pink gold, then steel, and platinum. Unsurprisingly the Patek Philippe reference 2499 is the most frequent entry with 15%, with the double crown world time reference 2523 at 8%.
