Q1 Describe the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study that the U.S. Department of Education undertook in the late 1990s.

Hint: Make sure to discuss study’s goal, subjects, and variables in the data.

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study measured the growth of over 20,000 students. They ranged from kindergarten all the way up to 5th grade, The students were chosen from all over the country to portray a study of American schoolchildren. This study measured how the students performed in school. The study also gathered information like gender, family structure, socioeconomic status and race.

Q2 Describe regression analysis in your own words.

Hint: A correct answer must have a discussion on a main concept of regression, often called as, “all else being equal”, “controlling for other variables”, or “Ceteris paribus”. The author explained this concept using “the circuit board analogy”.

Regression analysis is a method that examines the relationship between two variables or more of interest. This method lets you filter through data. It does this by holding every variable except the two you want to look at then it’ll show you how those two are different.

Q3 What is a drawback of regression analysis. What type of questions can regression analysis not answer?

Hint: A correct answer must have a discussion on causality versus correlation.

The fallout of regression analysis is that it cannot prove causation. The analysis also can’t suggest any ideas like blank causes blank.

Q4 What role does the quality of schools play in academic performance of students.

Hint: See page 150.

from the reading, it said that data showed that black students in good schools don’t lose ground to their white counterparts and that black students in good schools outperform whites in poor schools. So based off this information the quality of schools do seem to have an impact on the children performances in school slightly but not drastically.

Q5 Continued from Q4. How could you control for the quality of schools in the study?

Hint: For this question, you may need additional information in addition to the assigned reading. You may Google search someting like “how does regression control for variables”.

I think it would be hard to control the quality of schools because the reading said that of course parents can buy books for their kids but it doesn’t mean they’ll perform any better in school. There’s different techniques parents may do that influence how students perform in school but it would be difficult to control the quality of schools because so many other factors come into play. During school teachers could conduct studies for everyone. When performing your analysis, you just have to remember to include the key variables to get your answer not all are important but some are more important than others

Q6 The author says that regression is more art than science. What does he mean?

The author wrote this: It should be said that regression analysis is more art than science, I saw this as the information isn’t exactly one way or the other. Like art, it’s important to see different perspectives and meanings.

Q7 What are major takeaways from the reading?

After reading, these were my takeaways. I learned that there are tons of factors piled in this one study. Because of this, regression analysis plays a huge role which it’s talked about a ton through out. I also learned that Regression Analysis can unscramble puzzling problems. which helps allows us to divide our variables we need and see how they correlate with many things that take a lot of work to figure out.
