(Updated: 2020-07-20 12:07:15 EST)

This is for my friends in Virginia, replicating some of the dataviz in COVID-19 in Maryland, US: Daily Updates and Insights with Granular Local Data. The MD version has more data, sorry! :)

Q 1. When and where did COVID-19 start in Virginia?

The first confirmed COVID-19 case was reported in Fairfax county on 2020-03-07.

Q 2. How many confirmed cases do we have now, and where are they?

As of 2020-07-19, 77430 confirmed cases have been reported in 133 counties. This means there are 907 people with confirmed COVID-19 per 100,000 population in the state. Below figure shows number of confirmed cases by county. There are 133 counties in Virginia (compared to only 24 in Maryland!), the figure shows only top 40 counties in terms of the confirmed cases.

Q 3. How fast has it been spreading?

Since testing capacity has been low, we cannot confidently answer this question. Nevertheless, we can see the number of NEW confirmed cases each day. The first figure is for the entire state. We want to see the number of new infections to be stable more or less, without sudden and large increases.
