Q1 Describe the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study that the U.S. Department of Education undertook in the late 1990s.

Hint: Make sure to discuss study’s goal, subjects, and variables in the data.

The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study provides detailed information about childrens early life experices to a wide variety of people designed toward researchers, policy makers, teachers and parents. The data they collected focused on childrens care, education, health and development for the formative years to kindergarten entry from birth. The studies objective was to depict correlations of aspects in childrens life and their academic performances.

Q2 Describe regression analysis in your own words.

Hint: A correct answer must have a discussion on a main concept of regression, often called as, “all else being equal”, “controlling for other variables”, or “Ceteris paribus”. The author explained this concept using “the circuit board analogy”.

A regression analysis uses a set of data and uses correlation to see if the variables move with eachother and show trends. When looking at a singular variable with regression analysis it will then hold all other variables constant which is refered to as “Ceteis parius” which orginiated from the Romans. The use of statistical techinques are seen when figureing out correlation.

Q3 What is a drawback of regression analysis. What type of questions can regression analysis not answer?

Hint: A correct answer must have a discussion on causality versus correlation.

Regression analysis demenstrates correctieltion very well but doesnt display the cause of the correlation, this is refered to as causality. Within the readings the author said “A regression alone can’t tell you whether it snows because it’s cold, whether it’s cold because it snows, or if the two just happen to go together” (148). This scentence perfectly states how a reason is not given for why that correlrion occures and without futhur research there is many reasons to why the correlation is and how the causailty cannot be found.

Q4 What role does the quality of schools play in academic performance of students.

Hint: See page 150.

Studies shown in this article stated that students in better school systems outperfeormed kids that were in lesser educational school sytems regardless to their race. The quality of a school speficly plays a huge role within their acidmic performance, the reading brings up how people are more concerned over black/white test scores rather than the bad/good school gap which seemingly comes of as a greater issue. Within the early years of a childs education they type of school sytem their introduced to is crucial and displays big impacts on children according to the data in the article.

Q5 Continued from Q4. How could you control for the quality of schools in the study?

Hint: For this question, you may need additional information in addition to the assigned reading. You may Google search something like “how does regression control for variables”.

Control variables are normally not interested in but their directly related to the dependent variable, the want to be removed from the equation to yield better results. Although control variables enter regression the same was as independent variables but are interpreted differently.

Q6 The author says that regression is more art than science. What does he mean?

The author saying how regression is more of an art rather than science trying to teach the easier concept to grasp how regression analysis and correltions are like putting the peices together in a painting and displaying a painting rather than a singular figure. When looking at certain things you must look at to what could be causing the good or bad correlation

Q7 What are major takeaways from the reading?

The major takeaways from this reading were that not everything can be predicted surley, even through correlation. Correlation is a tool economists and individuals can use to determine the outcomes through trends and different variables but it is never certain and always a gamble. The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study that took place in the 1990’s was also fascinating to me discovering over 20 thousand chidlren par-took in.

Q8 Hide the messages, but display the code and its results on the webpage.

Hint: Use message, echo and results in the chunk options. Refer to the RMarkdown Reference Guide.

Q9 Display the title and your name correctly at the top of the webpage.

Q10 Use the correct slug.
