About the Data

The data for these visualizations come from the following GitHub data repository maintained by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering (JHU CSSE): https://github.com/CSSEGISandData/COVID-19. The Map download comes from Google Maps API https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/. The data show fewer COVID-19 cases than actually exist in the US due to under-reporting. COVID-19 deaths are probably a better indicator of spread of the disease than confirmed cases https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCa0JXEwDEk. On March 10th, the Center for Disease Contol began reporting only state agregated cases instead of local clusers. At this time, the points representing the number of cases by state shift from local clusers to a single point at the center of each State. The Diamond Princess Cruise ship (docked in Northern California) and Washington, DC are represented along with the state agregated data.
