Please consider that a lack of testing will result in no confirmed cases when interpreting the graphs.

Full_lockdown is defined as all non essential travel and businesses are required to stop/cease trading. Exceptions are for health workers, people doing physical activity, and purchasing food.

Partial_lockdown_IS (including schools) is defined as encouraged closure on services such as transport, retail, restaurants, and bars. People are encouraged to work form home if possible, social distancing is heavily encouraged, and schools are closed.

Partial_lockdown_ES (excluding schools) is the same as Partial_lockdown_IS except schools are open.

Partial lockdown in the US as different states are taking different action.

*Previously this graph showed Ireland in full lockdown on day 24 as all non-essential businesses were encouraged to close and people to avoid non-essential travel, however they were not required to. As of day 27 these guidelines have changed and Ireland has entered into Full_lockdown. On April 10th,11th, and 12th, (days 41-43) results from tests that had been sent in previous weeks to Germany were returned which is why the number of cases has increased.

Total number of cases since records began

73 days after China’s first confirmed case they changed their procedure for diagnosing corona virus. They allowed x rays of people’s lungs to confirm a case. Up until this point it could only be confirmed though testing nucleic acid (blood test). On day 119 (28/03/2020) Hubei has allowed people to re enter the main city, Wuhan, but not leave. It is expected that full restrictions will be lifted on day 130 (08/04/2020). On 01/04/2020, 122 days after China’s first case, they announced they will now be counting asymptomatic cases i.e. people who have tested positive for the corona virus but do not exhibit the symptoms. WHO guidelines are for all cases to be reported as 75% of people who test positive but are asymptomatic, are actually in the pre-symptomatic phase meaning they will develop the symptoms.

On day 71, Georgia governor, Brian Kemp, put a ‘shelter in place’ restriction on the state as ‘new’ evidence of how the virus spread became known to him. Previously, he did not know that people who did not have symptoms could be acting as carriers and spreading the virus. He only discovered this information on 01/04/2020, 71 days after the first confrimed case in the US. On 24/04/2020, Georgia governor has allowed some non-essential businesses to reopen including fitness centres, bowling alleys, tattoo parlours, barbers, nail and hair salons, and massage therapy businesses, despite a constant increase in the number of confrimed cases (20th - 775, 21st - 818, 22nd - 846, 23rd - 881). On 27/04/2020 movie theaters and restaurants will be allowed to reopen.

Cases per million people

Figure 3: Cases per million people

Ireland increasing before Italy does not mean that Ireland are projected to have more total cases confrimed. It means that Ireland have more cases confirmed per million earlier than Italy. This could be due to any number of reasons such as more testing was carried out during this period. Italy and Ireland are two vastly different countries in terms of the population such as the age demographic and spatial density. Please do not interpret this graph as Ireland will have more confrimed cases compared to Italy.

Number of new confirmed cases per day

These graphs are easier to interpret than the previous line graphs to show the difference in new cases day by day. BE CAREFUL when interpreting the graphs as they have different scales on the y-axis.

As the USA is such a large country both in terms of size and population, and the fact that there are so many cases there now, plus the difference in action being taken by state, the graphs of the number of confirmed cases may be hard to interpret. To aid readers, the following are the total number of cases in the USA, the total number of cases per state and the measures they have enacted in that state.

This graph has been made as it is not possible to see small increases in other states using the first map of the US where NY and NJ are included.

If you click on the blue markers a histogram of each state’s daily increase in cases will pop up.
