Overview

As of 3/17/2020 at 2:13:09 AM, the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University reports that there have been 4,661 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States.1 The World Health Organization reported on 3/01/2020 that approximately 14% of COVID-19 patients experienced severe illness, and approximately 5% of COVID-19 patients were critically ill.2 The incidence trajectory has public health officials increasingly concerned about the health care system becoming overwhelmed.3 As a result, public officials and health care administrators in New York State are taking unprecendented emergency measures to increase health facility surge capacity.4 To provide proxies for supply and demand for COVID-19 related health care services, the data visualization below compares the cumulative number of positive cases of COVID-19 to the number of hospital intensive care unit beds in New York City and counties throughout the state.
