Indicator Availability

There are 244 SDG indicators that are used to measure progress toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. However, data availability for these indicators is varied with some indicators having better data coverage than others

We downloaded all the indicator data available on SDG Tracker. This plot shows the proportion of indicators with data available for each of the SDGs

Indicator tiers across goals

Each of the SDG indicators have been classified into three tiers by the Inter-agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators.

  • Tier 1: Indicator is conceptually clear, has an internationally established methodology and standards are available, and data are regularly produced by countries for at least 50 per cent of countries and of the population in every region where the indicator is relevant.

  • Tier 2: Indicator is conceptually clear, has an internationally established methodology and standards are available, but data are not regularly produced by countries.

  • Tier 3: No internationally established methodology or standards are yet available for the indicator, but methodology/standards are being (or will be) developed or tested.

Here we look at how the distribution of the tiers across the SDGs.

Indicator tiers available on SDG Tracker

The SDGs can be grouped into three broad pillars:

  • Biosphere (SDGs 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15)
  • Economy (SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8, 9)
  • Society (SDGs 4, 5, 10, 11, 16, 17)

Here we look at the indicator data availability across these pillars based on the SDG Tracker data.

We also look at the distribution of the indicator tiers across the SDG pillars.

The age of the most recent indicator data - all countries

The SDG Tracker data has country level data and records a time-series of the data available for each country, in each indicator. Here we show the year with the most recent data available for each country, across the SDGs.

The age of the most recent indicator data by region

This plot shows the same data but broken down by region.
