Visualizing Malaria incidence evolution in Africa (2000 to 2017)

The origins for our question:

S. Bhatt, D.J. Weiss et. al. - The effect of malaria control on Plasmodium falciparum in Africa between 2000 and 2015 - Nature 2015; October 8; 526(7572).

• Current visualizations aggregate at regional or map level

• Or alternatively, they are not well suited to ascertain, in a simple way, the progress made by each country in fighting this disease:

We will aim to generate a more comprehensive graph, that allows to obtain insights visually and at the same time, enables to see the actual numeric values

I used World Bank data for the visualization (dataset located at https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.MLR.INCD.P3)

Only data from 2000 & 2017 was used, in order to have a bird’s eye view of the trend(s)

• Unnecessary columns from the dataset were removed

• Filtering was performed to only keep African countries
  

• Countries that have missing incidence values were removed
  

• Outliers that have insignificant contribution to the data & to the visualization (countries with an extremely low yearly Malaria incidence) were removed
