The title of the article I selected to discuss for this assignment is “Most Americans Say the Current Economy is Helping the Rich, Hurting the Poor and Middle Class.”

Give a 3-4 sentence summary of the information being presented

This article presents that about 69 percent of U.S. adults are saying that the economy today is helping wealthy people whereas 64 percent of American say that people who are poor are being hurt by the current economy and 58 percent of adults the economy is hurting people in the middle class. It also presents that the views of the economy of the country is related to the political leanings. For example, Republicans and independents who lean toward the Republican party were more likely to have a positive view of the current economy (75 percent) than those who lean toward the Democratic party (41 percent). In addition to the information mentioned above, the article presents that 65 percent of lower-income adults say they worry almost daily about paying bills and 55 percent of lower-income adults say they frequently worry about the health care cost for themselves as well as for their families.

What is the data source from which the information is being produced?

The data source from which the information is being produced is the American Trends Panel (ATP), a nationally representative panel of randomly selected U.S. adults created by Pew Research Center.

How might the source data have been collected/generated? If the site points you to resources about how the data was collected, feel free to rely on those resources. Otherwise, given your knowledge of research methods & data collection, how do you think the data was collected/generated?

The source data had been collected through survey responses from 6878 randomly selected U.S. adults between September 19th, 2019 and September 29th, 2019. The respondents (panelists) participated through self-administered web surveys. The panelists who did not have internet access at home were provided with a tablet and internet connection.

What do you think was the process that analysts went through to take the data from its raw form (the state it is in right after it is collected), to the point of arriving at the conclusions presented in the article?

I think the analysts organized the survey responses using Microsoft Excel or other data processing software. Then they sorted out the responses according to people’s income status, their political leanings and other personal information. After sorting out the information obtained from the survey, they calculated the percentage of the respondents for the topics they were interested in investigating. After the percentages were calculated, the authors presented the findings in this article.
