For this project, we are using data from the article titled, “Writing home: how German immigrants found their place in the US” by Felix Krawatzek.
The dataset provides a variety of information about the letters sent between the United States and Germany.
Understanding this data will help to uncover information about United States-German immigration and communication.
The total letters of numbers that were recorded in the dataset was 13774.
The total number of start/end city pairs was 116. This includes letters from city A to city B and city B to city A as two separate pairs, if applicable.
Number of letters sent, by country - Almost all letters were sent from the U.S.
Number of letters received, by country - The majority of letters were received by Germany, although a decent amount (1,277 letters) stayed completely within the U.S.
Evaluation of the send/receive pairs. Most letters were sent from the U.S. to Germany, as expected by the distribution above.
