Explaining glomerular filtration rate

  • Doctors need to know the renal function of their patients. A form to estimate the renal function is estimating the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The GFR can be estimated with different equations.
  • This app can calculate the GFR (or renal function) based in serum creatinine (that the doctor obtain with a blood sample), the sex, age and race of the patient
  • This is a real app, that will help me and other doctors to estimate GFR
  • The next slide show that if dorctors have a patient, they need to do many calculations.

Why an APP?

Based on: Levey AS, Stevens LA, Schmid CH, Zhang YL, Castro AF 3rd, Feldman HI, et al. A new equation to estimate glomerular filtration rate. Ann Intern Med. 2009 May 5;150(9):604-12.

If doctors need this equation, you can see all the needed calculations¡¡¡

Example

  • If a doctor has a patient who is an African-American Woman, 20 years old, with creatinine of 0.8
  • He has to do the next calculation
round(166*((0.8/0.7)^(-1.209))*0.993^20,1)
[1] 122.7
  • Therefore, this app will help¡¡¡
