In the Australian fires that started on 5th September 2019 an estimated 500 million animals have died, some of which are specific to Australia. Thus many species are feared to have been extinct. So far the fires have claimed 25 human lives and almost 11mm ha of terittory have been impacted. Some relief has come from the recent storms, but there are more fears of fires spreading due to the lightning storms.
