Strategy

Goal

To create ecological awareness in Akumal.

Environmental Education is the program with the highest social impact of all of our programs. It requires to articulate efficiently the diverse action lines that are necessary for the achievement of a change in mentality and awareness whilst promoting the active participation of the society of Akumal to make it a sustainable tourist destination.

In order to make this viable we needed to focuse on working with the youngest component of the community, namely kids from primary and telesecondary school, teenagers from highschool, their parents and with other highly participative adults from Akumal, Chemuyil, Puerto Aventuras and Tulum.

Formal & Informal Education

This consisted in organizing a group of \(8\) main topics, presented here in the table.

From the topics a total of \(32\) activities were carried out with an impact on 1777 beneficiaries.

Akumal Cero

For the second year, this program comprises the integration of the local community on specific actions for a more appropriate and efficient \(waste - management\). This program was supported by the Municipality of Tulum, Akumal being one of the three official sites for the Reciclaton.

There were - 6 meetings at Centro Comunitario Transformar Educando and Akumal Bay Resort;

  • \(1\) Clean up in town;

  • 1 program launched by the Municipality, exchange of waste for plants;

  • \(9\) talks for \(117\) people regarding waste management in Akumal.

Reciclaton

It consisted in working with the community to organize a more efficient use, re use, recycling of the waste, its separation by type and final collection.

In coordination with the Municipality and a company specialized in waste collection and treatment we launched in May this year this campaign in Akumal Town and Akumal North.

The company collected the waste and weighted the last Friday of every month at the Domo (basketball court) as the official site.

As for October we have been able to collect 4830.7 kg, with a total of 87 companies and 20 houses participating in the program.

Conclusions

So far this program has had a great impact amongst the community of Akumal by making it participating actively in one of the most urgent problems, "the appropriate management and use of the household waste".

Many activities were carried out and a great participation was achieved, thanksfully with the support of our sponsors.

Special thanks to the Kanan Group, Club Akumal Caribe, Akumal Bay Resort, Delegado de Tulum and the staff from Ecology of the Municipality of Tulum.

In 2020 we expect to continue this program in coordination with the Municipality and be able to improve our achievements.
