Choose one of David Robinson’s tidytuesday screencasts, watch the video, and summarise. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeiiqmVK07qhY-wvg3IZiZQ

Q1 What is the title of the screencast?

Analyzing Simpsons guest stars and dialogue in R

Q2 When was it published?

August 30, 2019

Q3 Describe the data

Hint: What’s the source of the data; what does the row represent; how many observations?; what are the variables; and what do they mean?

The source of the data is tidyverse, there are 1200 observations and 6 variables: season, episode number, production code, episode title, guest star, and role.

Q4-Q5 Describe how Dave approached the analysis each step.

Hint: For example, importing data, understanding the data, data exploration, etc.

When Dave imported the data, he used the library(tidyverse) function. Next, he pulled up a list of all the Simpsons guest stars and ordered it to see who appeared in the most episodes. Then he found whether they appeared as themselves or as characters from the show using filter and count functions, taking into consideration for people who were “himself” “herself” and themselves (“self,” “selves”). He even went further to download dialogue data and found which guest stars had the most lines of dialogue during their appearences. Additionally, David analyzed which characters used their signature catch phrases the most by sorting out role words.

Q6 Did you see anything in the video that you learned in class? Discuss in a short paragraph.

I found that some of the techniques David used were learned in class. When he is importing data from tidyverse which is an already downloaded package he used the library function as we have used in class. Another function I recognized was the mutate function to create a new variable from the dataset. David also used the summarize function to summarize the variables by groups.

Q7 What is a major finding from the analysis.

The biggest finding from the analysis was using TF-IDF to filter out the characters who spoke at least 500 words in 27 seasons to detect which Simpsons character used their signature catchphrase the most. The character Lou was found to say “cheif” the most out of any other character on the show.

Q8 What is the most interesting thing you really liked about the analysis.

The most interesting thing about the analysis was finding which characters used their catchphrases the most. The Simpsons relied heavily on character catchphrases throughout the show and some characters like Bart have multiple catch phrases.

Q9 Display the title and your name correctly at the top of the webpage.
