Below is a comparison of travel times near the Chestnut Street Bridge, comparing travel times on streets before vs after bridge closure. Travel times are compared to travel times at the same times on different dates (e.g., travel times at 4pm on a Friday are only compared to other travel times at 4pm on Fridays).
Travel time data collection occurs on Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays. There are three days of data collection since the bridge closed: Friday, August 9, 2019; Saturday, August 10, 2019; and Monday, August 12, 2019. Travel times from these three dates were compared to Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays before the bridge was closed (one comparison in June 2019, one in September 2018, and one comparison in June 2018). I also compared to a Friday average, a Saturday average, and a Monday average; averages only include data from summer 2018.
When considering data collected during the evening rush hour (all streets aggregated together):
However, there are nuances concerning specific streets, dates, and days of week. The table below displays differences between travel times when the bridge was closed and travel times when the bridge was opened. Red cells represent comparisons when travel times were longer (slower traffic) during bridge closure. Blue cells represent comparisons where travel times were shorter (faster traffic) during bridge closure.
Below is a street-by-street comparison of travel times average before the Chestnut Street Bridge closed and averages of three weeks after the bridge closed. Traffic flow was consistently slower on Mondays after bridge closure than before. On Fridays and Saturdays, the patterns varied by street.
