I’ve created some fake data to show what we could do with our data. The variable “year” is just 1993 for all counties, which is why they all are the same color and have the same value.

Multi-layer, interactive map

This is my favorite, but obviously less good for a static paper publication.

Click on a county to get more information about it. Click different radio buttons to see different variables be mapped and then when you click the county, the data displayed will represent the layer you are viewing.
