The A level gender gap: attainment and entries (1996 - 2018)

This interactive chart illustrates the gender gap between males and females in A level subject entries and attainment for each year between 1996 and 2018.

Users are able to:

• Watch the animation using the play button. To pause, click on a relevant location on the slider bar.
• Hover over a bubble to display the subject label and the raw data on entries and A*/A percentages.
• When hovering over the chart, click ‘box select’ or ‘lasso select’ in the top right corner (just above the legend) to highlight specific subjects.

It is based on published Department for Education statistics covering students at the end of Key Stage 5 in England. We will update with data for 2019 when this becomes available later in October 2019.

Bubble size is proportional to the total number of entries.
Subjects with at least 2,500 entries each year are included.
Coverage: A level students at the end of KS5 in England.
