Intoduction

As a part of Quantified Self project, I decided to do an analysis on my personal Apple Health data. I intend to obtain an overview of the measure factors used in the health data compiled in my i-phone, different activities I have performed daily, weekly, monthly and yearly, miles walked or ran in a year, flights or stairs taken, etc.

Question identification and clearly defined objectives

  1. How many steps do I take in a day?

  2. What is the distribution of steps everyday for a week?

  3. Distance covered walking/running everyday on an average?

  4. How many flights did I cover last month?

  5. What is the distance covered YTD and which year has the most?

Data collection procedures and preparation

I have not been an avid user of the Apple Health data services. After detailed research into the data and the format, I exported the data from my phone. The file was in a zip format which was later derived as a xml format. I have used this data for my analysis.

Steps taken each day

How many steps do I take in a day?

Plot

The highs in the data point definitely match with my activity where I walk to the train station between 8 am-8:30 am. I take a walk along the waterfront after lunch around 1 pm. There is some higher activity which usually after 5pm which will be either gym or walk back home. A high step count before sleep would be my night walks. It seems some false positive data is captured during sleep time which requires further analysis.

Weekly Steps Heatmap

What is the distribution of steps everyday for a week?

Plot

Here what clearly jumps out is the mid-week where I usually have my cardio workout scheduled and usually have my phone with me during the workout. The rest of the days usually have the 2,000-6,000 step count. The heatmap points to the hours of the day when I am very active around the day where it exceeds 10,000 steps. Generally the intensity is higher around 1 pm and between 6 pm - 7 pm which shows my workout time in the gym.

Distance covered walking or running by intensity of graph

Distance covered walking/running everyday on an average?

Plot

This shows that I do some light to moderate running on Friday and Wednesday whereas I usually do moderate walking for rest of the days and spend a relaxing Sunday.

Flights covered in a month

How many flights did I cover in a month of a year?

Plot

Usually, I do not take stairs and I live in the third floor which makes me take average 1 flight of stairs. The representation is a high around end of month which could be skewed by some movement. What surprised me that I take less number of stairs or the data is not inputted accurately by my phone’s measuring device.

Distance covered over the years

What is the distance covered YTD and which year has the most?

Plot

This definitely shows since I have been using the new phone as of 2017, I have been very active by 2019 and covered considerable amount of distance as well.

In conclusion, my personal Apple health data does provide some detailed input and gave me a good awareness into the QS initiative. However, the data representation, visulization and analysis would be enhanced and add more value into the QS initiative if recorded by a wearable tech device.
