The simplest metric of how embedded in this community people are is the extent to which those they follow are also following ASA.
It’s a little clearer on a log-x plot.
We can look at how this proportion varies with the number of friends. Not sure if this will be informative…
And the raw number of friends which are also following the ASA…
Below I’ve printed the order 1 egonets in the symmetric graph for 20 random followers of ASAnews who had symmetric degree of at least 10 and with no more than 100 Note that those with less than degree 10 comprise 39.8093% of the total network, and those with more than 200 comprise 15.2243%.
And now let’s drill down into some of these Louvain clusters. What do they look like, if we cluster them again? Who belongs to them? Etc.

Now let’s look at a network of co-followings within those users most followed by ASA.
I’ve constructed a “surprise matrix” which measures how often two users are followed relative to how often we would expect. For example if \(a\) has \(10\) followers and \(b\) has \(15\) followers out of \(100\) people in our sample, we would expect that a proportion $10/100 * 15/100 = $ 0.015 of our 100 users should follow both purely by chance. So if we observe that a full \(8\) of the \(100\) follow them both, that should get our attention, whereas only \(1\) should be entirely disregarded. The difference between the actual proportion and the proportion expected by chance will be the weights in the following plots.
Below we’ve listed those pairs which cooccur less often than we would expect, indicating negative ties.

Bottom line here is we’re not seeing much avoidance. Although following one user says a lot about who others you would follow, it doesn’t exclude you from following anyone, at least among these top 500.
