I think recommender systems can play a large part in increasing bias. For example, news article recommendations and follower recommendations on twitter. Twitter will recommend to the user similar profiles and similar articles and not provide any opposing views. This can create a divide among a population and what people take a truth and lies. This can be seen throoughout the US especially during election season and in regrds to politics. I believe that recommender systems ought to be used to help balance people’s intake of news, rather than push it to an extreme.
